How Cigars Are Made

Cigars are a cylindrical roll of tobacco for smoking. The cigars come in different shapes, sizes and colors.

A cigar has two main dimensions, its ring gauge (diameter in sixty-fourths of an inch) and its length. A typical cigar is 6 inches long by 42 ring gauge, but other measurements can vary considerably.

There are three main cigar shapes: corona, churchill and robusto. Coronas are the most common size, with an open foot and closed head. A churchill is 7 inches by 47 ring gauge, and a robusto is 5 inches by 50 ring gauge.

The outer wrapper leaf of a cigar has an effect on its flavor and aroma. It is also a factor in its cost. The most expensive cigars are made with a dark-brown, or maduro, wrapper, which must be silky and oily to be attractive.

How They’re Made

The raw materials for cigars are high-quality tobacco leaves grown in some of the world’s finest growing regions. But not all tobacco is created equal, and some crops are better than others.

After harvesting, the tobacco is arranged in large piles (pilones) and fermented. The fermentation process is a natural reaction that rids the tobacco of undesirable properties such as bitterness. The fermentation process takes a day or so, but it’s a critical part of the making of a fine cigar.

Like wine, the best cigars are aged to achieve a peak in their flavors. It’s a process that involves adding heat, water and pressure to the tobacco in order to naturally dissipate its acidity, transforming it from raw, bitter to mellower and more nuanced. The ultimate goal is to achieve perfect aging, where all unwanted qualities are removed.
