The Benefits of Smoking Cigars
A cigar is a whole leaf tobacco product, usually with a binder and filler and sometimes with a wrapper. They are commonly smoked for their flavor and aroma, which can vary between brands.
Cigars are considered more sophisticated than cigarettes and are often viewed as status symbols. They are a popular choice among the wealthy, and they have been included in caricatures of the rich and of capitalism, and are commonly smoked to celebrate special occasions such as the birth of a child or graduation. Cigar smoking is also a social activity, with smokers frequently gathering together to enjoy their favorite cigars.
While cigars do contain nicotine, a chemical known to be an appetite suppressant, many people smoke them for the pleasure of the experience and for the relaxing effects they provide. The practice of cigar smoking can help reduce stress, and it is typically accompanied by a beverage or food, making it an ideal way to relax after a long day at work.
Moreover, research has shown that people who smoke cigars are at low risk for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and emphysema. However, the smoke from a cigar contains many of the same harmful chemicals as cigarette smoke. People who smoke more than one cigar per day are exposed to an amount of toxic fumes that doubles their chance of having a coronary heart disease or stroke, and they have a much higher risk for lung cancer.
According to the 2021 National Youth Tobacco Survey, more middle and high school students from certain racial and ethnic groups report currently using cigars. In addition, flavored cigars are available and appeal to many young people.
