What is a Cigar?
A cigar is a tube-shaped tobacco product made of tightly rolled, cured, and fermented leaves that are surrounded by a wrapper that may contain flavors and other ingredients. It is lit on one end and smoked, although the smoke is usually not inhaled into the lungs. Cigars typically contain nicotine and many cancer-causing chemicals that are harmful to smokers and nonsmokers alike. Heavy cigar smoking can lead to a variety of health problems, including oral, larynx, and esophageal cancers; lung diseases, such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis; and heart disease. It can also increase the risk of death in people with coronary heart disease, because it interferes with how well the drug clopidogrel works to inhibit blood clot formation that causes blockages in the arteries that can cause heart attacks and strokes.
Historically, cigars have been considered luxury items, enjoyed by the wealthy as a social pastime and totem of success. Historic portrayals of cigar smokers often depict them wearing top hats and tailcoats, and cigars are still commonly given as gifts or smoked to commemorate special occasions.
The AJ Fernandez Saint Luis Rey is a wonderful example of a cigar that is both delicious and interesting. It was created to honor the memory of Herberto Padilla, father of the famous Ernesto Padilla, and is a solid medium-bodied complex smoke. Like all premium, handmade cigars, it requires a certain amount of time to reach peak flavor. During this stage, all undesirable characteristics such as bitterness or harshness are eliminated, and the tobacco is at its most harmonious and balanced.
