What is a Cigar?

A cigar is a long, tube-shaped tobacco product that contains tightly rolled cured and fermented tobacco leaves or other materials with various additives. It is smoked by lighting one end and inhaling the smoke through the nose or mouth, not directly into the lungs. Heavy cigar smoking can be unhealthy and even dangerous, increasing the risk of cancers of the mouth, larynx (voice box), esophagus, and lung. It also increases the risk of heart disease and emphysema. It also damages the teeth, causes bad breath, and contributes to periodontal disease.

Cigars offer a unique experience for smokers, unlike cigarettes which are usually smoked quickly to get nicotine into the system, cigars are meant to be savored and enjoyed. The experience can be relaxing and can cultivate a sense of appreciation for the complexities of the flavors, aromas, and craftsmanship that go into making a quality cigar.

A quality cigar should have a pleasant aroma, a smooth draw, and a balanced flavor. To test the quality of a cigar, one can lightly squeeze the filler every half inch or so and look for uniformity; there should be no divots or bulges in the filler, which indicates poor construction.

The best cigars are made of quality tobacco, which is cultivated using natural fertilizers. The most premium cigars are crafted by experienced cigarmakers who can produce a variety of sizes, shapes, and styles to satisfy many different tastes. Cigars should be stored in a humidor and kept at the correct humidity levels to maintain their quality.
