What Are Cigars?
Cigars are a form of tobacco that is rolled into a cylindrical shape and covered with a leaf. They are rolled in a variety of ways and have varying strengths and flavors.
The most expensive cigars are a true art. They are handcrafted in a process that involves hundreds of different workers who touch the product before it reaches the smoker. The result is an authentic expression of the maker and the soil from which it was grown.
Tobacco that has been fermented and aged properly will taste like a more refined and mature product. It will have less vegetal, green notes and will be more redolent of raisin, almond and orange blossom.
Unlike cigarettes, which are mass-produced and chemically altered, premium cigars are handmade and natural. No tobacco leaves are used that are treated with artificial chemicals to enhance flavor or color, and every leaf is rolled using the same bare hands.
They are also produced in a climate that allows for the fermentation of the leaves in an organic, natural way. The fermentation process transforms the tobacco and removes many of its bitter and astringent qualities, producing an enjoyable, smooth smoke that is full of flavor.
The health effects of cigar use vary based on the type of cigar, the amount of time spent smoking, and how deeply a user inhales. It is believed that frequent use of cigars increases a smoker’s risk of oral cancer, lung, bladder and head or neck cancer and heart disease.
