Cigars are made with tobacco leaves from different regions. They can be made with high quality leaf from Cuba or with leaves of inferior quality. Cigars also use secondary raw materials such as tasteless gum and flavoring agents. They are typically sold with a band around the top to keep the wrapper in place.
Premium cigars must meet certain standards. They are handmade, contain 50 percent or more natural long-leaf filler tobacco, have a wrapper made from whole leaf tobacco, and have a minimum weight of six pounds per thousand units. These cigars may be strong, medium, or mild. A high-end cigar will have a higher price than one made from coarse leaf. Some tobaccos take longer to ferment and age, which in turn raises the price. Additionally, storing cigars in a warehouse requires additional costs.
Consumers who smoke premium cigars are overwhelmingly male, white, and with a high level of education and income. Premium cigar users are rare among the young, poor, and minority populations. This may change if new marketing campaigns are implemented, changes in regulations, or if prices are lowered. The introduction of flavored cigars may also encourage more people to try them, which could increase their nicotine intake and the likelihood of addiction. However, these new flavors may also expose people to chemicals that are harmful to their health.
To start making a cigar, the tobacco plant is grown indoors. After six to 10 weeks, the tobacco plant is transplanted outdoors. The plants are then pruned to ensure the proper leaves are present. The outer wrapper is covered with cloth to protect it from the sun. The tobacco plants take several months to reach their full maturity in the field.
