What Are Cigars?

Cigars are long, thick tobacco-filled rolls that can be smoked. They contain nicotine, which is addictive, and cancer-causing chemicals.

Smoking cigars can also cause serious health problems, such as lung damage and heart disease. The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act requires that new flavors of cigars undergo a rigorous Food and Drug Administration review before they are sold.

Unlike cigarettes, which are manufactured using processed tobacco, cigars use whole leaf tobacco. This is why they are more expensive than cigarettes and can be harder to find and purchase. However, price isn’t always a good indicator of quality. In blind tastings, inexpensive cigars can often score better than more expensive ones.

Cigars can be categorized as full, medium or mild in strength and body. Tobaccos that are powerful, high in oil content and dark in color, such as ligero tobaccos, are used to make full-bodied cigars. Tobaccos that are less powerful, lower in oil content and lighter in color, such as visos and secos, are used to make medium-bodied cigars.

Cigars are also categorized by their size and shape. Little cigars and cigarillos are rolled in small diameters, while larger cigars are rolled in large diameters. They can be shaped into a corkscrew, wedge or culebra (three-strip), and they can be made with either a natural or flavored wrapper.
