The Growing Popularity of Cigars
Cigars are a luxury item, associated with wealth and status. They are often seen as a symbol of the old world, and historically have been used to celebrate accomplishments such as the birth of a child. Some people enjoy cigars because they make them feel relaxed. Others simply love the taste and aroma. The cigar industry has evolved over the years. The cigars we smoke today aren’t the giant stogies that you’d see in old movies, and they come in all shapes and sizes. Some even look very much like cigarettes. Cigars are also a popular pastime among friends, allowing them to share conversation and relax.
Unlike other tobacco products, premium cigars are made from one thing and one thing only: pure, unadulterated tobacco. This tobacco is grown without chemical fertilizers or pesticides, and is a natural, sustainable product. The ingredients are selected with purpose; the way in which the different fillers, binders, and wrappers complement each other is much like how a wine connoisseur pairs wines with dinner.
While cigar smoking has historically been lower than cigarette smoking, it is rapidly growing in popularity with young adults. According to the National Youth Tobacco Survey, cigar use is nearly equal or even surpasses cigarette use in many high schools. HHS, in partnership with the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau and the Federal Trade Commission, should establish systems to monitor cigar use patterns, characteristics, knowledge, and perceptions, as well as develop strategies for tracking their appeal to youth.
