What Are Cigars?

Cigars are defined in the United States tax code as “any roll of tobacco wrapped in leaf tobacco or in any substance containing tobacco” that does not meet the definition of a cigarette. The term cigar also includes little cigars, large cigars and cigarillos.

A Handcrafted Product

Compared to cigarettes, cigars are completely handmade. They require hundreds of hands to produce. They have more than 200 steps in the production process and are a complex, multi-level operation.

Country of Origin

There are a variety of cigars from different countries that vary in flavor and strength. Some have a distinct profile that can be described as sweet, spicy or earthy. Others are full-bodied and offer a pronounced kick.

Taste and Flavor

The nuances of a cigar’s flavors are created through aging. This is similar to aging wine, and can take decades to achieve perfection.

In addition, the country of origin can affect a cigar’s aroma and flavor. For example, Cuba has been known to produce a unique smoky and sweet taste that is not found elsewhere.

A reputable cigar is made from only the finest tobacco. The leaves are carefully chosen and then grown and cured. After fermentation, they are aged to remove any bitterness or harshness that could interfere with the mellower, more nuanced personality of the tobacco.
